MGM Takes A Loss On 'Dragon Tattoo': Does This Mean David Fincher Is Out? ›

I cannot believe this movie actually lost money. And I cannot believe they’d consider anybody other than Fincher for this. It would’ve been a much less successful movie without him.

Oscar for Film Editing goes to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

laviecine:

Whoa. Interesting. Unexpected.

Bel’s mentioned this a few times, but my ballot, as well, has turned out not so great.

Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - A Thousand Details

I couldn’t resist myself and bought the album—$9.99 for almost 40 songs and 3 hours of music seemed like a bargain. Despite the 40 songs, this one is the one that always gets my attention.

Today’s movies

I started off the really early morning with The Help, whose rental window was about to expire. I was a little hesitant about starting the day with a 2+ hour movie (my attention span is a bit limited), but just a few minutes into The Help I knew that would not be a problem. What really made this such an entertaining flick was its great story and a superb cast. All the characters in the movie were so well-rounded and they all couldn’t have been played any differently or any better. I am not even embarrassed to admit I sobbed through roughly fifty percent of the movie. Heart-wrenching.

As others have already mentioned, the standouts were Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain. And while everyone has raved about Davis and Spencer, deservedly so, I was drawn to Chastain. Her character was so unique and Chastain played her so earnestly. It’s no wonder she’s the female Fassbender, appearing in every movie being made in 2011 and 2012.

The Help was followed by an even longer The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I went into this movie with extremely high expectations. Not only is the movie based on an amazing series, but it also has David Fincher involved. And on top of that, I was not a fan whatsoever of the Swedish version (too fast-paced and the characters did not quite match those from the novels). Despite these high expectations, I was completely blown away with every single aspect about Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo.

The opening credits sequence was so disturbingly awesome. Both Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig played their characters to a tee. The movie, which was roughly two and a half hours long, progressed at a very steady pace and was very faithful to the novel. And the score…ah, the score. Though The Social Network’s score fit the movie well, it’s not my cup of tea. The Dragon Tattoo score, however, was a perfect complement to both the action-packed scenes and the heavily troubling scenes. Man, I wish more movies were like this.

Karen O, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Immigrant Song

Oh man, indeed. This is one badass cover, and Zeppelin is still (for the most part) king in my book. I am seriously excited about this soundtrack now.

Karen O, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — Immigrant Song (from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Oh man, this song takes me back to my high school days when I thought Zeppelin was king. It’s so badass. If Reznor and Ross’s last collaboration, The Social Network, is any indication I already know this soundtrack is going to be excellent.

I’m really excited for this movie, especially since the Swedish one was such a let down. I wish the trailer had a little more meat to it, but it still looks very promising.

The web has been abuzz lately with the “leaked” (speculation is that Sony leaked it themselves) red-band trailer of David Fincher’s newest flick, The Girl with Dragon Tattoo. Finally, the film’s official green-band trailer has hit the interwebz, proving once again that Fincher is the trailer king.

If there’s anyone that’s capable of producing hype around his films based on trailers it’s David Fincher (remember that amazing trailer for The Social Network?). And this trailer is no different. From the snippets that we see, it’s classic Fincher—the dark tones and the opaque colors reminiscent of Zodiac, the fast pacing of Fight Club, and the moodiness of Se7en. More striking is Rooney Mara’s transformation. Portraying tough chick Lisbeth Salander, she’s pretty unrecognizable from her previous Fincher film, The Social Network.

The trailer’s fast cuts and racy music fuel our excitement, but it entices us with a final branding of “the feel bad movie of Christmas.” Now who can resist that? See for yourself.

Details From Fourth ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Book Revealed ›

Stieg Larsson had originally planned the Millennium series to be a five or six part series. It’s a shame he never got to finish it.

Goran Visnjic Joins David Fincher’s ‘The Girl With Dragon Tattoo’ ›

Whoa, Visnjic as Armansky? I don’t think he really fits the character. I was expecting someone even older and with more of a fatherly, authoritative presence. I guess I’ll have to wait to see if Visnjic pulls this off.
